First thing is to remember in your mind using gaps or trees as a reference to where you took your shot.

If you have a buddy as an option, have them walk to where you took your shot and mark the spot the deer was standing. You may not find blood immediately but this is important information in recovery.

If a buddy is not an option, poke an arrow in the ground or something bright easily seen with a flashlight. Then walk a straight path were you shot the deer and mark that spot as well.

After the spot is marked look for hair and or blood.
If found mark the blood or hair.

Look at our (examining the shot page) to see what kind of lead time you should give.

After lead time is given, walk 20 yards or so to see if you can locate blood. At this time it should be clear if you need assistance or if you have plenty of sign to locate the animal.
